Tom Coates on the mass amateurization of everything

In a post on his plasticbag.org, Tom Coates summerizes the movement toward amateurization of, well, nearly everything. Most of the article focuses on weblogs and how they’ve enabled just about anyone to publish if they are inclined to do so. It’s the new homepage, he notes, but with temporal context and ease of use.

Blogs are the hot topic right now, but like everything in technology, at some point they will be replaced by something else. What will that be? I recently posted about my personal wiki. As more and more web apps reach maturity, I only see my use of the web as a platform increasing. The only thing that was missing was a personal hub for my online work, and the simple markup and simple structure of a wiki turns out to be the best CMS for my needs. Will some evolved version of the restricted wiki or wiki as CMS become the web app desktop and hard drive of the future?

And dare I mention libraries in the context of this post?
