How the online newspaper model is backwards
This is just a quick pointer to the recent discussion about how closed online newspaper archives are hurting both the public and newspapers themselves. The discussion recently heated up after this post by Dan Gillmor in which he describes this issue in detail. Another log on the fire is Searching for The New York Times from Wired in July. The article demonstrates how the Times has dropped in online long-term relevance, largely due to a drop in search results, as a result of keeping its archives restricted.
Other places this is being discussed:
Cory Doctorow @ BB
Free Range Librarian
Jay Rosen (also)
Rosen, as noted by the Mad Librarian, actually dives into the topic with a broader view, looking at the overall issue of permanence on the web.
